The new Kevin MF King EP is haunted by loneliness. Riots Plague Tolls begins with the jagged and ragged "Not Now" on which Kev warns and pleads along with a brittle acoustic strum and electric piano: "Couldn't let me down / You'll let me die alone." The almost jaunty head-bobber "Lonely Landlord" rolls along merrily, but is punctuated by feedback squalls and a ghostly loneliness. "You Don't Seem To Like the New Me" begins, "Calendars run on the moon / Winds and waves break the mood / Staying away from the bottle / Haven't been touched in a while." The sound of the cavernous acoustic guitar strums and Kev's rasp reminds us, it's been a while for us too. By the time the gorgeous and psychedelic "Teething Thru Tolls" closes the EP, we too have been haunted by loneliness. Luckily we've had Kev to keep us company for four short and potent songs.

Multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Kevin MF King has had a winding, interesting musical career that has taken him from the hardcore/punk underbelly of Connecticut to the West Coast and back. Along the way he’s consistently dropped nuggets of interesting and memorable music. Riots Plague Tolls was one of his best releases in an increasingly prolific catalogue. It’s a smorgasbord of influences from folk and psychedelia to indie rock and more. It’s the type of release that keeps you guessing at every turn and one that you’re bound to discover some nuance of you never noticed before with each listen.
